What Is Aerial Bundled Cable (ABC)? Uses, Construction, and ABC vs. Bare Overhead Conductors

Aerial bundled cable is often considered when an overhead distribution line is being designed or upgraded, but the term “ABC cable” does not, by itself, define a project’s required construction. Voltage, conductor arrangement, support method, and route conditions can lead to different cable designs.

In this article, GENGU CABLE explains what ABC is, how it differs from bare overhead conductors, and the practical factors behind its selection and support. Since 1993, we have manufactured overhead power cables for distribution projects, including custom ABC constructions when project requirements call for them.

What Is Aerial Bundled Cable?

ABC is an overhead assembly with insulated phase conductors grouped into a bundle. Some designs use a dedicated messenger to carry tension between supports; in others, the specified conductors in the bundle form the load-bearing system. A single overhead insulated conductor can also be installed on its own—the bundled arrangement is what distinguishes ABC. A conventional bare overhead line, by contrast, uses exposed conductors installed separately, with air spacing between phases.

How Is ABC Cable Constructed?

Conductors and Circuit Layout

Aluminum and aluminum-alloy conductors are used in overhead distribution. The circuit determines the number of phase conductors, whether a neutral is required, and whether it includes an auxiliary circuit such as street lighting. A service connection may need a different core arrangement from a three-phase distribution main.

How the Bundle Carries Tension

ArrangementLoad-bearing elementPossible neutral arrangement
Messenger-supportedA designated messenger carries the principal span tension. Depending on the system, it may be insulated or bare.In some designs, the messenger also serves as the neutral.
Self-supportingThe specified conductors in the bundle form the load-bearing system without a separate messenger. The neutral, where required, is part of the specified bundle.

Insulation for Outdoor Service

Overhead cable specifications may use PVC, polyethylene (PE), or cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). The specified insulation affects permitted operating conditions, but its name alone does not establish the performance of the finished cable. Temperature rating and resistance to sunlight and weathering must be checked for the particular construction.

Where Is ABC Overhead Cable Used?

ABC is used on overhead distribution routes and service connections where a bundled arrangement suits the circuit and available space. Applications include:

  • Low-voltage secondary distribution: Local lines serving residential or commercial areas, including routes with limited pole space.
  • Service connections: Overhead connections from a distribution line to individual customers.
  • Street lighting: Distribution routes whose specified cable includes a conductor for the lighting circuit.
  • Medium-voltage distribution: Routes designed for a medium-voltage bundled cable system, with supports and fittings selected for that construction.

On tree-lined routes, repeated contact can abrade the insulation, so vegetation still needs to be managed. An energized ABC line must not be assumed safe to touch.

How Is ABC Cable Sized for a Distribution Line?

The cable must first have the voltage rating and construction required for the line. The phase conductors are then sized for the expected load, allowable voltage drop, short-circuit withstand, and applicable installation conditions. On a long low-voltage run, voltage drop may require a larger conductor even if a smaller one can carry the normal load. The design must also check that the protective device will operate under the fault conditions expected at the far end of the line.

Part of the cableSizing question
Phase conductorsWill they carry the load while meeting voltage-drop and short-circuit withstand requirements?
Neutral or auxiliary conductorWhat current and circuit function must each conductor serve?
Messenger or self-supporting bundleCan it carry the required tension across the specified spans and weather conditions?

For a messenger-supported line, meeting the electrical requirements for the phase conductors does not establish that the messenger can carry the span.

ABC vs. Bare Overhead Conductors

Supports and fittingsHardware must match the bundle or its messenger.Insulators and associated hardware suit the individually installed conductors.
Incidental contactInsulation can reduce some contact-related faults; damaged covering and exposed connections remain concerns.Contact with vegetation or another conductor can cause a fault.
Route requirementsA compact assembly may help where space is constrained, subject to the approved line design. The route must accommodate the required phase spacing and clearances.

Bare conductors remain suitable where the route provides the required spacing and clearances. ABC can offer a more practical arrangement on a constrained route, but its purchase price alone does not establish the cost of the finished line.

How Is Aerial Bundled Cable Supported and Connected?

An ABC line needs to be held along its route, secured where tension is taken up, and connected where power branches off. Those jobs call for different fittings:

  • At intermediate supports, suspension fittings hold the cable in its designed position.
  • At line ends and tension sections, anchoring fittings transfer line tension to the support.
  • At branches and service connections, connectors make the electrical joint. Some low-voltage aerial bundled cable systems use compatible insulation-piercing connectors.

Each fitting must suit the cable’s conductor sizes and support arrangement. If ABC replaces a bare line, the existing poles and spans also need checking for the new cable’s weight, tension, sag, and clearances.

FAQ

Can ABC be used for both single-phase and three-phase distribution?

Yes. ABC can be configured for both single-phase and three-phase distribution. Service connections may use a different arrangement from three-phase secondary distribution, and an additional conductor can be included for a lighting or auxiliary circuit.

Is there a standard maximum span for ABC cable?

No. There is no single maximum span that applies to every ABC installation. Maximum span depends on the cable’s load-bearing construction, conductor or messenger strength, design tension, weather loads, route geometry, and pole capacity. It must be checked for the specific line design.

Can ABC replace bare overhead conductors on an existing line?

It can, but it is not a direct conductor-for-conductor substitution. The existing poles, spans, attachment points, pole loading, sag, and clearances must be checked for the proposed ABC construction and its fittings.

What standards apply to aerial bundled cable?

The applicable standard depends on the voltage, cable construction, destination market, utility requirements, and project specification. For low-voltage aerial bundled cable, examples may include BS 7870, NF C 33-209, or AS/NZS 3560, depending on the market. Confirm the required standard before finalizing the cable design.
